Foam Board Sculpture

With the foam board I tried to make an abstract human head out of unique shapes and line work. I wanted the head to proportional and have the structure of a skull but not look like an ordinary head. I used negative space to my advantage and tried to give the piece structural and architectural look.

Three of a Kind

For my three of a kind I chose to carve faces into gourds that represented the three basic emotions.

Sadness

Happiness

Anger

Artist Statement

Each piece driftwood has its own unique shape, size and essentially its own personality. The goal of our project was to create a cohesive sculpture that utilized the individuality of each piece of driftwood. The sculpture itself is a humanoid being that is rising from a sedentary position and into one of motion and change. It is shaking off the rust and starting a new day.
In this project we focused on infusing motion and gesture into the being, rather than having a stiff and lifeless sculpture.  We wanted to give the wood figure a story and background by using each piece of driftwood to its best potential. Focusing on the sculpture's shape and proportion was of great importance to the project and essential to success. This project was a great joy to create since driftwood is not your average material and was a delightful challenge.
